Welcome back to the “time to…” blog series. In the previous post, we discussed how it takes time to perceive the value of introducing a technology into a new or existing stack and that while this value may only be perceived by the end-user once it is rolled out productively, the technical & support team could perceive that value much earlier in the development cycle. This sparked the idea to create a blog series exploring some new technologies as we take an idea and turn it into a minimum viable product (focussed on an internal tooling use case). The idea itself is not yet ready to be revealed, but we know enough to be able to set up our baseline code repository which will be the focal point of this post. Without further ado, let's just jump straight into the reality that it takes time to… get started on a new development project. Just like it took some time (more than I would like to admit) to get started with this next blog post.

This wild and expansive playground of tech we all have access to comes with a caveat. It takes time to learn, test and experiment with the technology to determine if it is fit-for-purpose. Then it takes time to implement and integrate into your architectural landscape as you fight to get past roadblocks that your experimentation did not anticipate. Eventually, it takes time to automate parts of it to make it sustainable for day to day operations (so everything right?) and finally it takes time to roll it out productively. This can be a cognitively expensive exercise demanding large amounts of time and effort.

At the beginning of 2021, many of us expected life to go back to “normal”. However, the last two years have changed the workplace environment and the new “Hybrid Workplace” is here to stay! Employers and Management needed to adapt to the idea of flexible workplaces. But what impact has this had on company culture? How do employees stay productive and satisfied while maintaining a connection with their colleagues and management?

2021 added a sequel to the turbulent work environment introduced in 2020 and we felt the “new normal” set in. Over the COVID-19 era we saw the workplace visitation process, for visitors and employees, evolve from simple walk-ins into a complex variety of processes, procedures and controls. What was clear is that many businesses have introduced and settled on a hybrid workspace. This allows for employees and visitors to workspace resources or to work from home as required.

The workplace has changed. This will be news to no one. When we think about the workplace, we tend to focus on our personal lives and how we interact with the office. The office itself has also changed, specifically what information is needed from everyone who enters. Security, health, and safety have taken center-stage through Covid, and in this piece, we’ll distill how it’s made the old way of managing people in the office redundant.
